英语虽然从8世纪以来一直是苏格兰的主要语言,然而苏格兰各地仍在使用各种自己的语言和方言。大到城市到小到岛屿,苏格兰许多不同的口音,有的轻柔,有的浑厚,很多来苏格兰留学的小伙伴惊讶地发现自己学习英语那么多年,竟然听不懂“英语”!其实这一点不奇怪,因为很多苏格兰方言即使和英语使用同样得单词,这些单词也会有不同的发言。像任何以“n’t”结尾的单词都会立即变成以“Y”结尾的发音。因此,couldn’t 听起来就像could’y,等等。最知名的例子之一是 don’t,发音为“dinnae”。与此相反的是 do,发音为“dae”,像day。

  • Aye – Yes (是)
  • Naw – No (不)
  • Ken – Know (知道)
  • Noo – Now (现在)
  • Och! – Oh! (哦)
  • Hoachin’ – Very busy (非常忙)
  • Banter – Thrilling conversation (开玩笑,逗乐)
  • Braw –Nice, fantastic, brilliant (非常好)
  • Fae – From (从)
  • Dreich – Gloomy, drab (阴沉、单调)
  • Scran – Food (食物)
  • Bairn – Child, wee one (孩子)
  • Bonny/Bonnie – Beautiful (漂亮)

  • Canny – Cannot (不能)
  • Eh – What? (什么)

  • How ye daein? – How are you?(你怎么样?)
  • Ay, a wee bit – Yes, a little bit(是的,一点点。)
  • Gonny no dae that – please don’t do that! (请别那样做!)
  • She’s up tae high doh – worked up really high (她很亢奋。)
  • Whit’s fur ye’ll no go by ye! – What’s meant to happen will happen (该发生的总会发生。)
  • Haste Ye Back! – Return soon (再见。)
  • It’s a dreich day – Referring to a rainy, gloomy day (今天天很不好。)
  • Lang may yer lum reek! – Long may your chimney smoke (referring to good health and long and prosperous life) (祝身体健康、长寿。)
  • Keep the heid! – Keep your head up (打起精神。)
  • Ah dinnae ken – I don’t know(我不知道。)
  • Noo jist haud on! – Hold on, take your time, slow down (不着急,慢慢地。)
  • Am pure done in – I am pretty tired (我很累。)
  • Ah umnae – I am not (我不是。)
  • Ma heid’s mince – My head is mince (literally), showing confusion (我糊涂了。)
  • Good craic/What’s the craic – Good fun, what is happening (好玩,那是什么?)
  • Patch aht – Stop that (停!)
  • Whit dae ye cry thon yin? – What do you call that one? (你叫那个什么?)
